Allyson Way Wanselius studied dance and music in San Francisco, working as a freelance dancer after finishing her academic studies.
She came to The Cullberg Ballet in 1979, looking for a more theatrical and dramatic dance company than what she could find in the United States. With the repertory of Birgit Cullberg, Mats Ek, Jiri Kylian, Christopher Bruce, Ohad Naharin, Per Jonsson, among many, she worked with The Cullberg Ballet for nineteen years. There she held a position as a rehearsal assistant alongside her dancer contract from the early 1980s, and after retiring from the stage in 1997, remained as rehearsal director for another year.
"I like to describe my ballet classes as utilizing the technique as a tool for all dance-emphasizing correct placement with musicality, dynamics of movement quality, projection, breath and organic flow. My interests in injury prevention and rehabilitation also are integrated into my classes, with encouragement to correct faulty technique and alignment. Most of all, I want my classes to allow dancers to move freely and be expressive, and to enjoy the feeling of projection and covering space."
