Who can join the course?

This course is designed for both teenagers and adults aged 15 and older who want to learn the basics of playing the electric guitar. No prior knowledge is required.

Course Description

This is a course for anyone who wants to learn the fundamentals of electric guitar, including the unique features of the instrument and the music styles it's used in. We will explore electric guitar techniques, essential equipment like amplifiers and effects units, and the key elements of playing in various musical genres.

Goal

By the end of this course, you will be able to play different types of chords, riffs, and simple melodies. You will also learn how to tune your electric guitar, use your amplifier or effects unit, and understand the unique aspects of electric guitar playing.

Course Content

We will primarily focus on power chords, riffs, and a few basic songs, and possibly even a solo. The instructor is open to requests and will happily incorporate specific songs, techniques, or theory topics you’d like to explore. Throughout the course, you'll get a well-rounded understanding of the electric guitar and its capabilities, and how to use equipment like distortion and other effects to enhance your sound.

Course Structure

The course runs over five days, with each session lasting 60 minutes. Classes are held live via Microsoft Teams in a small group setting (maximum 4 participants). The course is taught in English.

Materials

Course literature is not included in the course fee. Information about required materials will be provided in the course invitation. You will need your own electric guitar, a practice amplifier or effects unit.

Kursledare

Stefan Miladinov

Stefan Miladinov is a guitarist, music educator, and researcher of Balkan folk traditions. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz and Pop Guitar Performance from UKIM - Faculty of Music Arts in Skopje.

At Folkuniversitetet, he teaches guitar with a focus on phrasing, vibrato, and blending technique with musicality, helping students develop their unique sound. He has also worked as a private guitar tutor for over a decade, providing tailored lessons for students of all levels.

Outside of teaching, Stefan has performed with acclaimed artists, including Zarina Prvasevda, whose ensemble won the UPBEAT Best New Talent Award in 2023. He has played at major festivals such as Balkan Trafik in Brussels and recorded with bands like Chromatic Point (“Sliki od Starata Kukja” (2014), “Izgrev” (2016)), Petar Malinov (“100 denari” (2014)), and Cobalt Code Unit (“Soilwork” (2020)). Passionate about folk music, he researches Macedonian musical traditions, working to adapt tambura techniques to the guitar and integrate them into contemporary genres like world music, folk rock, and metal.
