Aim
Throughout the workshop, you will be guided through a variety of exercises and receive personalized feedback to enhance your acting skills. The aim of this weekend workshop is to help you access your emotional range, overcome barriers and establish profound connections with your characters.
Target group
Prior acting training or experience is beneficial. Please bring comfortable clothes but most importantly, an open mind and willingness to explore your emotional depth as an actor. The workshop will be held in English, a sufficient knowledge of the language is required. Recommended minimum age is 18 years.
Course content
Day 1
- Introduction to Method Acting: Learn about the history and origins of Method Acting, tracing its roots to influential acting teachers such as Stanislavski, Strasberg, and Adler.
- Emotional Memory: Explore the concept of emotional memory and its role in connecting the actor's experiences with the character's emotions.
- Sense Memory: Practice using the sense memory technique to recall sensory experiences, helping you embody the character's physical and emotional sensations.
- Improvisation: Engage in improvisational exercises to develop spontaneity and creativity while staying true to the character's mindset.
Day 2
- Character Analysis: Analyze a given character's background, psychology, and motivations to develop a deeper understanding of their behaviors and actions.
- Scene Study: Work on scenes from various plays or films, applying the Method Acting techniques learned to enhance the authenticity of your performance.
- Embodying the Character: Practice physically and emotionally transforming into the character, finding ways to merge your own identity with that of the character.
- Partner Work: Collaborate with fellow participants to explore the dynamics between characters and develop chemistry on stage.
Kursledare
Hugo Gama
Hugo Gama is an actor and stage director with a wide experience in teaching, directing introduction to theatre, interpretation, improvisation, mask and clowning courses, at public theatres, professional schools and universities.
Hugo was born in Portugal, in 1978. He did his studies at Coimbra and Lisbon universities and have learned The Acting Method with Marcia Haufrecht from Actor's Studio, Devising and Improvisation with Alexander Kelly from Third Angel and Mask with Mario Gonzalez from Théâtre du Soleil. He trained at the School of the Mask, where he became teacher and staging assistant. As an actor, he was directed by renowned stage directors, such as Paulo Castro, João Brites and Filipe Crawford, who inspired him through their approaches and methodologies.
In the scope of a master in Theatre Studies, at the University of Lisbon, Hugo developed a research about actor‘s training methodologies, namely the mask technique and actor's consciousness on stage. Currently, he is enrolled in a PHD programme focused on collaborative theatre and the new writings on the contemporary scene. He staged the plays Ecos (winner of the Lisbon Annual Theatre Academic Festival, in 2017) and Espectros (audience award and an honourable mention, in 2018).
In his classes he adapts the methodology to the group with whom he works, listening to everyone and taking into account their proposals, ideas and expectations.
