This course takes a hands-on approach to environmental justice and critically examines who benefits and who is left behind in our transition to sustainability. Participants will explore the intersections of environmental degradation and social justice while engaging in multiple perspectives on environmental justice. Through case studies, discussions, and participant-led explorations, participants will engage in topics that span global and local contexts, such as climate justice, energy justice and just transition.
Content
The course begins with an introduction to environmental justice and its key components from multiple perspectives. We will look at different frameworks of environmental justice, explore environmental justice on a global scale and dive into a Swedish case study with competing global and local justice implications. At the conclusion of the course, participants will explore a case study of interest to them, engaging in topics discussed throughout the course with the opportunity to bring in new perspectives.
Practical information
The course is held online and in English. It consists of 5 sessions; each session will take place on Monday from 16:00 to 18:15 for five weeks. The course is aimed at those interested in creating a sustainable and resilient society and environment. No previous knowledge is needed.
About the circle leader
Anna Pattison is a transdisciplinary scholar and professional interested in how ecological and social systems interact and the role of justice in sustainable transformations. She holds a Master of Science in Social-Ecological Resilience for Sustainable Development from Stockholm University. In her master’s thesis, Anna investigated the conceptions of justice in the negotiations of an international environmental agreement on plastics pollution.
