Who is this course for?
This course is for adults with basic English skills (A2 level) who want to work as healthcare assistants in Sweden. It’s especially good for people who don’t have much formal education and want to improve their English for work in the healthcare field.
What will you learn?
You will learn basic English words, phrases and grammar for your work as a healthcare assistant. You’ll practise speaking with patients, families, colleagues, and supervisors. You will also learn to give and follow instructions, talk about daily tasks and schedules, patient care, emergencies, and common healthcare tools and equipment.
Course Content:
We will help you develop practical English related to healthcare work, including these areas:
• Introduction to Healthcare English – Basic words and phrases for communication at work.
• Vocabulary for daily patient care – Vocabulary and phrases for washing, dressing and assisting patients.
• Helping with meals – Talking about food and nutrition and helping with feeding.
• Assisting with mobility – Words and instructions for helping patients move safely.
• Reporting patient conditions – How to describe symptoms and explain changes in a patient’s health.
• Health and safety – Phrases for emergencies, infection control and safety at work.
• Making beds and patient comfort
• Handling complaints and concerns – Listening to patients and responding to their concerns.
• Family and visitor interaction – Talking to family members and visitors, answering questions and giving updates.
• Dealing with problems and difficult situations
• Work shifts, daily schedules, routines and patient care plans.
• Communicating with colleagues – How to ask questions, make requests, report problems and work as part of a team
Methods:
• Classes will focus on all language skills and will be taught in basic English.
• Please be willing to actively participate in class whether online or in the classroom.
• Activities will include role-plays, teamwork, and exercises.
• You should expect some homework each week.
Course Format:
• Two days online: You can join from home with a computer, tablet, or mobile device with an internet connection, microphone and camera
• Two days in person: Classes will take place at our school in Skarpnäck.
Course Goals:
You will learn the basics to understand others and make yourself understood in the workplace. By the end of the course, you should feel more comfortable English in everyday healthcare situations
Certificate of Attendance:
You can request a certificate if you attend at least 75% of the classes.
Course Materials:
Textbooks are not included in the course fee and must be bought separately. Your teacher will give you more study materials and tips. Further information to follow.
